Liquor Shops Operating in Violation of Norms Due to Nexus With Excise Department Officials

Moradabad (Desk):Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath talks about zero tolerance and envisions a corruption-free state. However, in Moradabad district, the ground reality seems different. Officials of the Excise Department appear to be hand-in-glove with liquor vendors, allowing them to openly flout the prescribed norms. The latest case has emerged from Moradabad. English liquor shops across the district are blatantly violating excise standards. One such example is the liquor shop allotted in Kashiram C-Block, licensed in the name of Neha Chopra. Shockingly, this shop is not operating at the allotted location. Instead, it is being run illegally two kilometres away at Shri Ram Chowk. The display board of the shop does not mention the licence number either — a mandatory requirement.According to excise rules, a licensee can set up the shop only within a 200-meter radius of the allotted location. However, Neha Chopra’s English liquor shop is operating far beyond this limit. When questioned about these violations, District Excise Officer Ravindra Pratap avoided giving a clear answer and simply said the matter would be “investigated,” effectively pushing the issue into cold storage without taking action against the violators. On camera, when the officer was asked about the permissible distance for operating a shop from the allotted location, he appeared clueless. Only after looking at himself on camera did he turn to his subordinate for help and then replied that the shop must lie within a 200-meter radius. This clearly exposes the negligence and incompetence within the department. As the saying goes — “Andher Nagri, Chaupat Raja; Take Ser Bhaji, Take Ser Khaja” — a city in chaos under ineffective leadership. Despite almost a year passing since the allotment of liquor shops, the Excise Department has failed to ensure compliance. Why were officers silent all this time? This raises serious questions about the functioning — and integrity — of the Excise Department in Moradabad.
